Miami-Dade moves to rip off red tape that blocked the sun; Goes for the Gold!

Permitting delays make it hard for families to go solar.

Hundreds of homeowners and solar advocates across Miami-Dade wrote to their commissioners asking them to improve solar permitting. And the commissioners listened. In September of 2018, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution to adopt a more streamlined permitting process for solar. Commissioners have instructed the county to go for the “Gold” solar permitting guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Energy’s SolSmart program. Miami-Dade currently follows SolSmart’s lowest-level “Bronze” standards.

The current permitting process for home solar installations in Miami-Dade County takes too long and makes going solar more expensive than it should be. Instead of taking a few days, permits for solar sometimes take months. The Gold designation would require a streamlined permitting pathway for small solar systems with a turn-around of no more than three days.
