RPS expansion signed into law

By Ben Delman on July 25, 2016

Today Mayor Bowser signed legislation to expand the District’s renewable portfolio standard (RPS). The bill, which passed through the council unanimously, increases the RPS to 50% by 2032 and will help low-income families benefit from solar energy.

This expanded renewable portfolio standard will make it easier for all District residents to benefit from solar energy. Today’s signing is an important victory for D.C.’s community of solar solar supporters as we continue to push our elected and appointed officials to ensure we have a clean, reliable electric grid that benefits everyone.

The bill now goes to Congress where it must pass through a 30-day hold period. The 30 days only count down when Congress is in session. According to the Congressional calendar, this should be in December. No opposition from Congress is expected.
