What is happening
The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) is really awesome– it provides grants to farmers and rural businesses to go solar. This lets them lower their electric bills by producing clean, renewable power. And, it creates good paying jobs in rural communities.
Solar United Neighbors has helped farms and rural businesses across the country use this program. We know it works! It will work better with increased funding.
Senator Tina Smith and Representative. Abigail Spanberger have introduced a great new bill that makes important changes to the Rural Energy for America Program and increases its funding. This is a great step forward to close the solar gap and making solar power and its benefits accessible to everyone. Their bill (the REAP Improvement Act of 2021) would triple support for the program from $50 million to $150 million. It would allow agricultural and rural electric cooperatives to be eligible for grants. And it would fund energy storage projects for the first time.
Take a moment to send a personal message to Sen. Smith and Rep. Spanberger for leading on this issue!
Make sure you change the subject line too. Tell them why rural solar matters to you (even if you live in a city!)
