Expanding solar access with community solar: Lessons for Pennsylvania from Maryland

By Zach Schalk on April 12, 2018

Community solar is a simple concept. It makes the benefits of solar ownership—lower electricity bills, improved community health, and economic development, to name a few—available to those unable to install solar on their own property, such as renters, those with inadequate roofs, and low-income families. While other states have recognized the opportunities presented by community solar, the Keystone State has fallen behind.

Although Solar United Neighbors is still new in Pennsylvania, we have a proven track record of fighting for community solar in states like Maryland. If you’d like to learn more about the innovative potential of community solar and how we can use this policy to expand access to solar throughout our state, you can watch our recent webinar presentation on the subject! You can also download our presentation slides here.

We’re working to educate Pennsylvania solar supporters about community solar, so that our growing solar constituency is ready to bring this innovative policy to the Keystone State. Stay tuned for more educational information about community solar from us in future posts. If you’d like to learn more, check out the community solar page in the learn the issues section our site!

Community solar

Community solar offers the benefit of solar to those who can’t, or prefer not to, install solar panels on their homes. These projects enable individuals, businesses, or organizations to purchase or lease a “share” in a community solar project.
