Successful Arlington Solar EV Charger Co-op wraps

By Aaron Sutch on March 13, 2019

Final installations are now wrapping up for the Arlington Solar + EV Charging Co-op. The co-op, launched last May, helped more than 55 participants install solar on their homes. It also resulted in the installation of nine Level 2 Electric Vehicle chargers. Solar United Neighbors partnered with the Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE) and Eco Action Arlington to help spread the word about the group and plan public information sessions.

The Arlington Solar + EV Charging Co-op is the latest iteration of solar co-op groups serving Arlington and greater Northern Virginia. Solar United Neighbors brought the first bulk purchase of solar energy in Arlington in 2014. Since that time, these groups have helped nearly 200 Arlington homeowners go solar and have installed 1.3 MW of solar.

“Adding a Level 2 charger at home speeds up the charging process considerably. It was a no-brainer to add the charger while we were already going solar.”
– Andrew Bridges, Arlington Solar + EV Charging Co-op Participant

By forming a group of interested buyers, co-op members ensure the most competitive pricing. Solar United Neighbors guides them through the installation process and providing installer-neutral and unbiased information to help make the best decision. Besides the support of the group, solar co-ops build a constituency of solar supporters to help promote favorable policy and fair treatment of solar owners.

This was the first year that our co-op successfully piloted an electric vehicle offering by enabling co-op members to have Level 2 electric vehicle chargers installed. This has proven to be a success as more people are now choosing to fuel their electric vehicle with the solar they produce on their roof. We are planning our next co-op in Arlington for Summer 2019!
