I think of it as not a big money saver but as the right thing to do, and the Inflation Reduction Act funds make it possible for a lot more people.

Why did you decide to go solar?

We have 2 daughters, a foster son, and 8 grandchildren. We want to do everything within our power to ensure that they have a livable future. We had the solar panels installed 6 years ago, we bought a used Nissan Leaf (EV), and we replaced our lawn with native, pollinator friendly plants. We are looking into geothermal and heat pumps because we believe it is extremely important that we – humanity – get off of fossil fuels immediately, if not sooner!

What was the process like for you? Did anything surprise you, or were there challenges you had to overcome?

Our panels were installed by Yellowlite. Their rep was knowledgeable and supportive. The guys who did the installation were friendly and worked quickly and efficiently. We have had zero problems with any of it since then.

Have any of your habits changed since going solar?

We drive an electric car; we have electric radiant floor heat in the kitchen and 2 bathrooms; and we recently replaced our gas stove with an electric induction stove.

Have you seen electricity savings since going solar? If so, what have you been able to do with that savings?

So far, according to our Solar Edge app, we have saved $3,749.04. So it will be several more years until we get back what we paid, but this includes charging our car. I think of it as not a big money saver but as the right thing to do, and the Inflation Reduction Act funds make it possible for a lot more people.

Have you been involved in any solar advocacy since becoming a solar owner?

We were on a solar tour once, and I tell people about our solar panels all the time.

What advice would you give to someone considering going solar?

It’s extremely important that we get off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible. If you can possibly afford it, there is no reason not to do it and so many really critical reasons to do it.
