The Gold Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout can receive. A scout earns this award by launching a project that creates a lasting impact on her community. Worthington Girl Scout Olivia Engel is earning her award by helping her neighbors go solar by helping to create a local solar co-op.

As a first step, Olivia set up a booth to recruit members to the group at a local environmental festival. “It went really well,” Olivia said. “We had multiple pages of contacts. Worthington is a good target audience because people here are interested in ways they can save the environment.”

Olivia’s interest in solar was sparked by her concern about the environment, which she also developed through Girl Scouts. Olivia researched this as part of a previous Girl Scout award project.

Olivia looks forward to continuing to encourage her neighbors to learn about solar through the co-op. Olivia looks forward to getting as many people as possible to sign up for the co-op as well as encouraging environmental awareness and protection through education.
