Harris’ Heroes: Diego Arene-Morley and Walter Lynn

By admin on August 31, 2011

From the roof of his best friend’s Mount Pleasant home, Diego Arene-Morley can see the results of his hard work: Solar panels on their neighbors’ rooftops.

The neighborhood has almost one-hundred solar homes — thanks to the work of teens Diego and his friend Walter Lynn.

Together, the high school seniors founded the Mount Pleasant Solar Cooperative, along with their parents, five years ago because they wanted to use more renewable energy.

The young men were inspired by the documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which examines global warming.

“We were sick of hearing about what other people are doing or what other people are not doing so we thought we’ll just try to do something,” Diego said.

The pair started with lots of research, then spread the word to their neighbors about the costs and benefits of going solar.

Now some neighbors are saving almost $2,000-a-year on energy.

From distributing fliers to holding a light bulb drive, their parents say the pair have been a guiding light for the co-op.
