There are lots of solar contractors, and it’s hard to tell if you’re dealing with a good one and getting a reasonable price. The co-op experience checked off both of those boxes.

Why did you decide to go solar?

I’m a climate activist, and I wanted to stop burning stuff. I also wanted to gas up my car from my roof, and I thought I could save some money over the long term.

Did anything surprise you about the process of going solar?

It was pretty slow. I had to make sure I had a good roof under the solar installation, so I wanted to do a new roof first. But once it’s going, the electrons just roll in.

Why did you choose to go solar with Solar United Neighbors?

It’s a reputable outfit, and I’m a big fan of Anya Schoolman.

What benefits did you experience going solar with a co-op?

There are lots of solar contractors, and it’s hard to tell if you’re dealing with a good one and getting a reasonable price. The co-op experience checked off both of those boxes.

Do you have any data about your solar system performance? What electricity savings have you seen since going solar?

I also installed an air source heat pump and an electric water heater. In the last six months (the air conditioning season), we sent 1.5 MW back to the grid. Our electric bill is negative, and we get SREC payments to us of $211 over that period. And in the winter, because of the heat pump, we have no gas bill.

What advice would you give to someone considering going solar?

Do it. With the new IRA credits (which we didn’t have), you can’t afford not to. If your roof has five years or less on it, get the roof done first. When you’re doing that electrical work, run a 220 line to your garage to charge an EV. Use all that juice. Pair it with a heat pump if you can. It works fine here in Maryland. It feels great not to pay the gas company and the gas station.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Solar Energy World was the contractor chosen by the co-op, and we’ve been happy with them.
