We did it for our grandchildren! The sun is forever.

Why did you decide to go solar?

We did it for our grandchildren. And we’ve always been pretty environmentally conscious and solar has always fascinated me. We also drive hybrid cars and plan to get a plug-in electric vehicle soon. That’s why we had an electric vehicle charger included with our solar installation.

Was there anything that surprised you about the solar process?

Going with a solar co-op and Groundhog Solar, our installer – I can’t imagine doing all of that ourselves. As an engineer, I know projects like this involve lots of permits and calls, but we didn’t do any of that. We just wrote some checks! It was very easy.

What advice would you give someone who is considering going solar?

I would say, join the co-op. And I am thoroughly impressed with Groundhog Solar. Their crew is really great. It was just a fun process!

What would you say to someone in this community who, like you, has deep ties to the coal industry? How would you like them to think about solar?

There’s only so much coal, but the sun will be here forever. And we need to address the climate crisis. Everybody needs to start thinking about that. This has been the hottest summer we remember in our 20 years in this home.
