The peace of mind I get from renewable energy is priceless.

Why did you decide to go solar?

I’ve wanted to go solar for years, and finally decided to do it in 2020. I contracted Mountain View Solar for the job. One side of my roof faces south, and they were able to install 29 panels. I couldn’t afford the batteries, and am waiting for technology to improve, and prices to fall. When that happens I can go off grid. And some day I might install a small residential wind turbine, so when the sun doesn’t shine, I’ll get wind energy–that’s a dream for now.

What was the process like for you? Did anything surprise you, or were there challenges you had to overcome?

The sales representative and the installation crew from Mountain View Solar were helpful, informative, and professional. I don’t recall any challenges. Overall it was fun and exciting.

Have any of your habits changed since going solar?

In 2021 I had a geothermal HVAC system installed, reducing the amount of energy used for heating and cooling the house, as well as heating water.

I now drive a hybrid vehicle, with plans for an EV in the next few years. I still use propane for cooking and two gas fireplaces, which I plan to replace within 10 years.

Have you seen electricity savings since going solar? If so, what have you been able to do with that savings?

Over the course of time, my system has produced approximately the same amount of energy that I use. My electric bills are the base service fee of $5 per month. For now, I use the savings to pay off the loan that funded the installation. The predicted break-even point will be in 15 years from installation. In addition to the financial benefit, I am proud to have done this because it’s the right thing to do.

Have you been involved in any solar advocacy since becoming a new solar owner?

My only advocating has been unofficial, singing the praises of solar energy to anyone who will listen to me.

What advice would you give to someone considering going solar?

Do it! Ignore the naysayers here in coal country.

Anything else you’d like to add?
