Here, amidst the arid landscapes, Mark Dunn faces a unique challenge: how to power irrigation pumps for 500 acres of alfalfa when the farm is entirely off the grid, nestled in one of the most remote areas of the state.

Enter a beacon of innovation and sustainability: a $253,405 Rural Energy for America grant. With this support, Dunn embarked on a journey to revolutionize his farming operation, paving the way for a greener and more cost-effective future.

The solution? A cutting-edge system harnessing the power of the sun.

Two 305 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) systems were meticulously installed, marking the dawn of a new era for Railroad Valley Farms. Today, these solar arrays stand tall, casting their gleaming panels over two expansive alfalfa fields, covering a total of 500 acres.

But this endeavor is more than just a testament to technological prowess; it’s a beacon of sustainability. In its inaugural year of operation in 2019, the system achieved a remarkable feat, producing a combined total of 223,400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in solar mode. This not only illuminated the fields but also resulted in significant savings – a staggering 16,385 gallons of diesel fuel spared from consumption.

“The system is performing beyond our expectations,” beams Dunn. “Though we encountered a slightly lower power demand last year due to a wet spring and downtime for cutting, the cost savings are tangible. We anticipate it will accumulate savings of approximately $1 million over its lifetime.”

Beyond the financial benefits, Railroad Valley Farms’ transition to solar power embodies a broader shift towards sustainable agriculture. By reducing reliance on diesel fuel and embracing renewable energy, Dunn’s initiative sets a precedent for environmentally conscious farming practices in even the most remote corners of the country.
