Community solar in Maryland

Developers are in the process of putting together community solar projects. We’ll let you know about options to subscribe as they become available.

After three years of organizing on the issue, Solar United Neighbors of Maryland worked with a diverse coalition of solar supporters and community advocates to pass community solar legislation in Maryland in 2015. We testified in support of the legislation, organized citizen outreach to legislators, and coordinated with other groups within our informal coalition. We were particularly proud of our role in building a coalition and pushing for a carve-out for low-income subscribers.

Maryland’s community solar program is currently in its pilot phase. You can read our report about the program in its first year and learn more about the details of community solar in Maryland.

Develop a project

In addition to traditional developers, community members are also working together to develop community solar projects. A community solar project can be located on the rooftop of a building (e.g. church, apartment, or warehouse) or on a piece of land. There are no restrictions on the types of buildings that can host community solar projects. View our resources for starting community solar projects!
